2016 was an interesting year for the bees. Warm spring weather in March and April jump started the summer forage and had the first sweet clover and alfalfa blooms out of the ground a good two weeks earlier than normal. However, drought like conditions prevented the bees from gathering much nectar from those early blooms, particularly the sweet clover. Fortunately an abundance of July rain turned things around and the bees did really well on the second alfalfa bloom while the wildflowers also began blooming in earnest throughout the prairies. In the end, the bees looked really great after the 2016 honey crop and the honey has a wonderful, sweet taste and light color.
